ACADEMY. DELIVERED IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES MAY 31, 1842.
Washington: Printed at the Globe Office, 1842. 11 pp. 8vo. Removed.
First edition. Cave Johnson had added an amendment to this bill which
might well have reduced the army, but James Roosevelt added a
substitute amendment which would have left the army at its then
current size. Ward, a Jacksonian, approved this position. "Instead of
building up systems of defence with prudent and economical
foresight, we see efforts made to break down the defences and to
deprived the government of the very means of maintaining its own
existence, and of providing for the welfare, the defence, and the
liberties of this great nation." He ends with Washington's
admonition, "in peace, prepare for war." OCLC and RLIN show only five
copies. A very good copy with scattered foxing. [27843] $40.00
