Thrupp, G.A. "THE HISTORY OF COACHES"

London; Kerby & Endean: 1877. A pioneering work on the subject, delving
back to ancient times, but with a majority of the text devoted to
16th-19th century vehicles. The book was based on a series of lectures the
author presented for the Society for the Encouragement of Arts,
Manufactures and Commerce in 1876, and is illustrated with a fine series
of plates, many based on period prints and paintings. Uncommon in the
original edition.

Hardcover. 5.75”x8.5”, xii + 152 pages, plus 38 lithographed plates;
publisher’s red cloth with pictorial covers featuring gilt and black
strapwork surrounding a gilt “Coach of the Time of Charles II”. Covers a
bit worn and rubbed; skillfully rebacked with new endpapers; a tiny bit of
internal soil.  [09909]  $500.00
