Edition. First issue dustwrapper with $12.95 price. Made into a
television mini-series that was well received and often rebroadcast.
A thick book not especially well made by a publisher with a
reputation during this period for poorly manufactured books; thus
uncommon to find in this condition. Miniscule closed tear to bottom
of dustwrapper inside flap. Fine copy in Fine dustwrapper. Hard to
beat this one! $750.00

piece in 1988 adding "all best." With black-and-white illustrations

that only 1000 copies of the trade edition were published. There were
also 526 numbered and signed copies. Fine in Near Fine dustwrapper
with a few brief closed tears. $500.00

16. (POE, Edgar Allan). Manuscript Found in a Bottle in THE GIFT: A
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR'S PRESENT FOR 1836. Philadelphia: Carey & Hart
[1835]. First Edition. Intricately embossed red morocco with a
ferocious eagle at the center and gilt lettering on the spine. BAL
10146 & 16126. The first appearance in print of Poe's macabre tale of
the sea later collected in TALES OF THE GROTESQUE. This is also Poe's
first appearance in THE GIFT and only his fourth appearance in a
book. Also includes "An Unwritten Drama of Lord Byron" by Washington
Irving. Very early owner inscription on third blank dated 9 October
1835. Illustrated with 8 (of 9) steel engravings, lacking a portrait
having nothing to do with Poe's tale which has no illustration to
accompany it. In our experience, this particular year is often found
lacking something, and in this case what it lacks is rather
insignificant. Bright, clean copy with only mild rubbing. Close to
Fine. $1000.00

calf, a superb publisher's gift binding. BAL 4024 & 16143. The first
appearance in print of this classic Poe piece collected the same year
in his TALES. Other first appearances include Longfellow (BAL 12074)
and Emerson (BAL 5202). This copy, which lacks 4 of the 8 plates (no
plates illustrated Poe's tale), has very little foxing and is in a
very attractive and fairly well-preserved publisher's binding. Minor
edgewear and rubbing, light chipping to spine head. Despite the
missing engravings, Near Fine. $950.00

request from his not yet then published novel SUMMER OF NIGHT. Fine
                                                                $200.00

the author and a brief allusion to Poe which may also be in the
author's hand. Laid in is a small sheet of contemporary paper with a
symbolic shorthand text in ink in an unknown hand within a triangle
