Howard Nemerov (February 29, 1920 – July 5, 1991) was United States
Poet Laureate on two separate occasions: from 1963 to 1964, and from
1988 to 1990. The Collected Poems of Howard Nemerov won the National
Book Award, Pulitzer Prize and Bollingen Prize. He was brother to
photographer Diane Nemerov Arbus and father to art critic Alexander
Nemerov.
This group is comprised of six typed letters, signed and eight
typescripts of poems, three of short stories and one of an essay. The
following eighteen pieces are all signed by Nemerov with the exception
of the photograph.
PHOTOGRAPH. A black and white photograph measuring 4 1/2" x 3" of
Nemerov seated in an easy chair looking up from a book.
TYPED LETTER, SIGNED. Bennington Vt, May 6, 1965. One page air mail
stationary with integral address leaf, to Ian Hamilton allowing him
the use of two poems for a forthcoming collection dealing with the
poetry of the War years. Nice content. The piece measures approx. 9" x
7 1/2". Very good.
TYPED LETTER, SIGNED. Waltham Ma, March 2, 1968. One page on Brandeis
University stationary, to a Mr. Bean. The piece measures approx. 8
1/2" x 5". Nemerov is sending two poems to Bean, apparently a teacher
of retarded children, that he requested. Nemerov confides that "my
poems are so sad" and "I tend to crying fits even when reading stories
to my own two youngest..." Nemerov wishes he could write for children.
A nice letter. Very good.
TYPED LETTER, SIGNED. Waltham Ma, March 22, 1968. One page on Brandeis
University stationary, to Mr. Bean with envelope. The piece measures
approx. 8 1/2" x 5". Sending a signed photograph. Very good.
TYPED LETTER, SIGNED. Waltham Ma, October 5, 1968. One page on
Brandeis University stationary, to Mr. Luetge sending signed
typescripts. The piece measures approx. 8 1/2" x 5". Nemerov advises
Luetge to write and develop his own ideas. Very good.
TYPED LETTER, SIGNED. Np, July 21, 1969. One page, to Mr. Luetge
sending signed typescripts. The piece measures approx. 8 1/2" x 11".
Nemerov thanks Luetge for his friendly letter and tells him about a
forthcoming book. Very good.
TYPED LETTER, SIGNED. St. Louis, July 10, 1970. One page, to Mr.
Luetge on Washington University stationary. sending signed
typescripts. The piece measures approx. 8 1/2" x 11". Nemerov thanks
Luetge for his comments. He talks about his books of essays and says a
forthcoming book of poetry is three to five years away. Very good.
