KENNEDY, JOHN P. & BLISS, ALEXANDER, EDITORS. AUTOGRAPH LEAVES OF OUR COUNTRY'S AUTHORS. Baltimore: Cushings & Bailey, 1864. Lithographed by A. Hoen & Co., Baltimore. First edition. Original gilt-stamped cloth (sword, musket, arrow & wreath), top edge gilt, new matching spine, 10-1/2 X 8-1/2 inches, a very good copy. Xi, 200 pages plus a leaf with a pastoral vignette. Notation on the original free end paper, "Carrie D. Du Barry, 4/22/64, Balt. 'Sanitary Fair' " - making this a very early copy, as the book was announced for April 19th, the date of the editors' Preface. Vignette title with tissue. The book contains numerous signed facsimiles of works of American literature, but, most notably, Lincoln's last copy (of 5) of the Gettysburg Address, the only one signed by Lincoln, which he wrote out for this publication in aid of soldiers' relief. According to Monaghan (Vol. One, Page 48) it's "Lincoln's final authorized version." Among others included were Key ("The Star Spangled Banner"), Irving, Holmes, Whittier, Dana, Stowe, Hawthorne, Bryant, Longfellow, Eliza Leslie, Lowell, L. Maria Child, Emerson, Willis, Audubon, Simms, Julia Ward Howe, Poe, Melville {"Inscription to the Dead at Fredericksburg"}, Thoreau, & many others, living and dead. This important work has become quite scarce. $900.00
