*ORMEROD, W. P., /CLINCIAL COLLECTIONS AND OBSERVATIONS IN SURGERY MADE
DURING AN ATTENDANCE ON THE SURGICAL PRACTICE OF ST. BARTHOLOMEW'S
HOSPITAL./*/ /Longman, Brown, Green et al, London. 1846. 1st edition,
bound in original dark blue cloth blocked in blind, 8vo, pp. xii, 312.

The author's only published book, and very scarce, WorldCat recording
only three institutional holdings worldwide. His only other publication
(which can now be traced) was a 48 page article, or pamphlet, entitled
"On the Sanatory [sic] Condition of Oxford", published in 1848 by T.
Combe of Oxford.

William Piers Ormerod (1818-1860) was a fellow of the Royal College of
Surgeons and, prior to publication, house-surgeon of London's St.
Bartholomew's Hospital. These collections and observations were made
during the author's surgical practice at St. Bartholomew from 1835 to
1844. The first fourteen chapters relate to various subjects, primarily
of a surgical or anatomical nature. The last six chapters contain the
substance of an essay on the comparative merits of mercury and iodine in
the treatment of syphilis (for which the author won the Jacksonian Prize
of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1842). It should be noted that, at
the time of publication, St. Bartholomew's gave over nine wards devoted
exclusively to the treatment of venereal diseases so the author had
ample opportunity to treat, experiment upon, and observe patients
suffering from these afflications.

Our copy is in the original binding, now bumped at the board edges, with
some rubbing to the extremities. Old ink inscription on front free
endpaper. Early reinforcement to hinges. Contents show typical foxing,
but quite limited in extent. Otherwise, the book is clean, tight, and in
good, to good plus, condition.

Price: $500.00.
