“THE CAPS FOR THE GIRLS MIGHT BE OF RATHER GAYER COLORS”

ROOSEVELT, ELEANOR. TYPED LETTER SIGNED, 2 PAGES, DEC. 10, 1926 FROM 49 E. 56th ST., N.Y.C., TO JULIAN GOLDMAN (owner of the Goldman Stores chain) concerning Mrs. Roosevelt’s upcoming children’s Christmas party. “You were kind enough to say that your buyers would get me anything of a useful nature that I want for my Christmas tree party. Could they get me woolen gloves and knit caps … [She lists the number and sex of each age from 5 to 13.] The caps for the girls might be of rather gayer colors.” [Offers to pay for the articles, mentions Goldman‟s wife, and a forthcoming visit to see Mrs. Goldman on Monday or Tuesday afternoon.] NICE INK SIGNATURE followed by “(Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt)” in type. ACCOMPANIED BY: a follow up 2 page letter signed for her by her secretary again listing the number and ages of the children, accompanied by penciled notations. Here sweaters are added to the gift list – “sweaters of varying shades but red or blue or tan, not the delicate one[s] that soil too easily.” (Remarkable for the close attention that the future First Lady gave to what was probably an annual event. Goldman - whose son is the playwright & screenwriter Robert “Bo” Goldman - was a personal friend of the Roosevelt's. F.D.R. was Goldman‟s attorney.) The 4 pieces, $600.00 ($500.00 to the trade) Postpaid
