Robinson, James H. JOURNAL OF AN EXPEDITION 1400 MILES UP THE ORINOCO
AND 300 UP THE ARAUCA, WITH AN ACCOUNT OF THE COUNTRY, THE MANNERS OF
THE PEOPLE, MILITARY OPERATIONS, &C. London: Printed for Black,
Young, and Young, 1822. 1pl., [v]-xix, [1], 397 pp. Illus. with 1
hand-colored and 6 b/w plates. 8vo. Later three quarter calf over
marbled boards. First edition.
Robinson was an English officer who enlisted as a surgeon in 1818 in
the Venezuelan army of liberation, and was one of the first
volunteers to reach Bolivar at Angostura. "The author has traversed
the interior of Venezuela by its most interesting route; has borne a
part in the sanguinary war which at this moment devastates it; has
gone through scenes of extraordinary suffering; and has throughout,
described domestic manners and public events with a freshness and a
force which are rarely evinced by the professed writers of similar
works. Perhaps no book of travels, since that of Mr. Parke, exhibits
a journey of such event, such suffering, and such interest; and
certainly no work gives views of the people of Venezuela and of the
present war which devastates that country, at all approaching to
these in accuracy or in interest. The author having written many
severe things concerning Venezuela... [he called the people a
"corrupt, stupid, beggerly and dishonest set of beings, chained in
ignorance and swayed by superstition and the most gloomy bigotry"]...
had desired to remain anonymous, but as he had since fallen a victim
to the climate there, the work was published under his own name."
