Massachusetts Medical Society / Volume VII/*
Boston, MA, Perkins & Marvin (printers) 1836, 1st edition, hb. Bound in
original slate blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. 8vo, pp. 288.
¶ In 1836, the Boylston Medical Committee of Harvard University posed
the question: "How far are the external means of exploring the condition
of the internal organs to be considered useful and important in medical
practice?" Oliver Wendell Holmes, and two other medical practitioners
submitted essays in response to this question, from which Holmes'
dissertation was chosen as the best and awarded the gold medal. The
committee, however, felt that the responses of Haxall and Bell also were
meritorious and "believed that the publication of [all three]
Dissertations would be of great practical utility, by calling the
attention of the profession to the subject discussed, and by the
important information presented in them". The work emphasizes the role
of of percussion and ausculation in diagnosis. It is not mentioned in
G&M, but is discussed in Heirs of Hippocrates (947). Our copy is in the
original cloth binding, now somewhat worn and soiled. The spine is
sunned, and the front joint is starting near the top of the spine.
Boards a bit bowed. Hinges tight. Some foxing to contents which are
otherwise perfectly readable. A good copy, notwithstanding.

¶ This is the first British edition, an American edition having
previously been published in a much more condensed version (pp. viii,
134) in Dunglison's American Medical Library in 1838 under the title "An
Outline of Inflammation and its Effects: Being First Principles of
Surgery". In his Introduction to the 1840 edition, Morgan does not refer
to the 1838 publication, but does mention that "our object, in
publishing this work has been, first, to enable us to abridge the early
part of our lectures, and allow longer time for the discussion of other
important subjects; and, secondly, to furnish the surgical student with
an outline of inflammation and its effects, brought down to the presen
period." The binding of our copy is worn, but not dilapidated. There is
the remains of an old label at the mid-point of the spine, and a 1980
ink inscription on the front free endpaper. Ticket of "Thomas Jones /
Medical Bookseller /91 / Aldersgate Street / London" on bottom of inside
front board. Front hinge cracked and binding a bit sprung, but contents
