KING, Stephen. THE PLANT. Parts 1-3. Bangor,
Maine: The Philtrum Press. 1982, 1983, 1985.
First Edition, First Printing. King had the
Stinehour Press print limited editions of The
Plant in three installments, from 1982 to 1985,
to be given by him as gifts. Each book was issued
separately, in editions of 226 copies. Vols 1 and
2 are single signatures, sewn in a printed wrap;
Vol 3 is multiple signatures, sewn and glued
(unsewn, unlike the others) into a printed wrap.
This set is out of series and not signed; Vol 2
is marked "Printer's Copy"on the colophon, so
presumably the other two volumes are as well. Vol
3 is complete with wrap (many were left unbound).
All are in fine condition, and enclosed in a
custom clamshell box (covered in green handmade
paper) with a printed spine label (& extra label
in the box). Complete sets are very, very scarce.

The original issues of King's unfinished novel,
issued as chapbooks sent to friends (in lieu of
Christmas cards) in the early 1980ís. The novel
is about an editor in a paperback publishing
house who gets a manuscript from what appears to
be a crackpot. The manuscript is about magic, but
it also contains photographs that seem very real.
The editor writes the author a rejection slip,
but because of the photographs, he also notifies
the police where the author lives. This enrages
the author, who sends a mysterious plant to the
editor's office. The story is told in epistolary
format, consisting entirely of letters, memos and correspondence.
