John Fawcett: The Important Journey from This World to the Next, Considered in a Sermon, Delivered at an Association at Bradford, in Yorkshire, June 13, 1810. And published in Compliance with the Request of the Hearers. Halifax: Printed and sold by P. K. Holden, [1810]. FIRST EDITION. Small 8vo pamphlet with remnant of original/early blue wraps at the spine; [2] + 32 + [2] pp.; with the half-title and terminal leaf of publisher's adverts.

Scarce sermon by the Baptist preacher, theologian and hymn-writer John Fawcett (1740-1817). Copac locates only one copy of the first edition (fittingly enough at York Minster); WorldCat finds none, and only three copies of a second edition, also published in 1810 (BL, Oxford). The greatly admired minister at Wainsgate, Yorkshire, Fawcett was once invited to succeed the celebrated John Gill (see our other auctions this week) as pastor of Carter's Lane, London, a move which would have been a huge leap upwards in prestige and salary. Tempted, Fawcett ultimately chose to remain in his humble surroundings, a decision he apparently never regretted, as evidenced by one of his most famous hymns, "Blest be the tie that binds."

Half-title a bit darkened and soiled, chipped at the top corner; some dust-soiling and light wear to the untrimmed edges of the leaves, two leaves with short closed edge-tears; otherwise clean and sound, firmly bound.
