Patrick James Stirling: The Philosophy of Trade; or, Outlines of a Theory of Profits and Prices, Including an Examination of the Principles which Determine the Relative Value of Corn, Labour, and Currency. Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd, 1846. FIRST EDITION. Tall 8vo in original publisher's cloth, sympathetically rebacked in green cloth with printed spine label; xxviii + 380 pp.; with the half-title. Goldsmiths' 34541; Kress C.6975.

An important and uncommon work that "treats, in a highly abstract way, of value, labour, profits, rent, foreign trade, the chief contention being, in opposition to Ricardo, that value depends solely on the relation of demand and supply. It purports to describe in outline the laws which would regulate the operations of trade in its healthy and unfettered state, assuming freedom from external interference of every kind, even from taxes for revenue" (New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics). Binding with some bumping and wear to the corners, light spotting and fading to the cloth, front board slightly warped; front free-endpaper with small chip, hole, and paper remnant; light scattered spotting to the first and last few leaves and the edges of the text block; otherwise quite clean and sound, firmly bound. Front paste-down with the original small bookseller's label of William Innes, Hamilton St., Greenock. A solid copy.
