Merchants Union Express Company Billhead.
A billhead dated September 18, 1869 from the Merchants Union Express
Company (American Express). Merchants Union Express Company was founded
in 1866, and for several years staged a "cutthroat competition" with the
popular American Express Company which had been founded in 1850. On
November 25, 1868 the two merged to form the American Merchants Union
Express Company, which was renamed American Express Company in 1873.
Evidently, given the date on this billhead, they did not immediately
dispose of the old stationary.
DESCRIPTION & CONDITION: Single sheet. 8.5"x4.25". Minor wear, light
soil. [40469] $50
