Alexander, William a. HANDWRITTEN ACCOUNTS OF 39 ROAD TRIPS IN THE US,
CANADA & MEXICO, 1922-1957: with 370 Photographs, Maps, &c. Original
archive. Approximately 1800 pages. Six (6) volumes, bound by the author in
green cloth with hand-lettered covers and spines, with index tabs which he
furnished as a finding aid. Also pasted in are road maps which he marked
for routes, some 370 photo-snapshots, &c. Each thick volume measures 9" x
5.75".   Very Good. Original Cloth.

William A. Alexander, b. 1905, was born in the wild mining country of
Washington State, but he enthusiastically appreciates West Virginia, the
state where he spent the rest of his childhood and all his adult life,
often comparing spectacular views on his travels to sights he admires at
home. He wrote these six “Trip Books,” recording the details of 39
automobile trips he took between 1922 and 1957, varying in length from a
few days to three months. A four-month stint with the Army in Europe during
WWII is also covered in one of the diaries. His hand-lettered titles on
these six volumes include the dates of his trips. (The numbers he assigns
to the volumes as well as his page-numbering systems are idiosyncratic.)
Each volume includes hand-numbered pages, a table of contents, and a “trip
index” of topics. The text is either neatly hand-printed or, occasionally,
typed single-space. ~~ William's trips cover a lot of ground, especially in
the U.S., but also in Canada and a bit of Mexico. In addition to pleasure
trips in the states, the first and earliest volume includes memories of 7
trips while in the Army Transportation Corps in World War II, including a
four-month tour in England and France in 1945. We have described the
