William Makepeace Thackeray: An Essay on the Genius of George Cruikshank. Reprinted verbatim from "The Westminster Review." Edited with a prefatory note on Thackeray as an Artist and Art-Critic by W.E. Chruch. London: George Redway, 1884. First edition thus. Very tall 8vo (29 cm) handsomely bound by Ware of Bristol in three-quarter crimson morocco over marbled boards, with gilt-tooled and -lettered spine, marbled endpapers, top page edges gilt; 60 + [2] pp. of text; engraved portrait frontispiece, in-text illustrations; extra-illustrated.

Thackeray's famous 60-page essay on George Cruikshank is here augmented and extra-illustrated with more than 130 leaves of plates, mostly by Cruikshank, including a number of double-page and hand-colored plates. Also bound in (and window-mounted, as are many of the plates) is an April 1887 article from Scribner's Magazine: "A Collection of Unpublished Letters of Thackeray." Binding with a touch of very light rubbing and wear to the extremities; a few plates with browning and spotting, scattered foxing to the text leaves and the edges of the text block; otherwise clean and sound, firmly bound. A handsome (and unique) presentation of the work of the inimitable Cruikshank.
