It's been a long, cold winter in the Cataloging Cave, and many months
ago the Book Elves thoughts turned to Spring, and especially Easter. The
book Elves have toned down their planning since last year's Burning
Bunny fiasco, which ended up with the flaming 50-foot wicker rabbit
effigy being dumped into the Connecticut River to prevent it setting
most of Northampton alight. Easter chicks are frowned on these days, but
with acres of fenced fields available, a brood of chickens supplying
summer eggs would not be a bad thing, so the Elves ordered 300 chicks
from Chicks 'R Us - Discount Poultry. Everything was normal for the
first week, but then the chicks began to develop unusually strong legs…
"You got geese", was the local farmer's opinion, but even he was
surprised when the oversized, ungainly feet developed long, thick claws.
And the legs kept growing, and growing- and in the end there is just no
mistaking an unexpected flock of 300 young ostriches.
But before the Book Elves had to deal with 300 ravenous and
semi-hysterical 6-foot tall poultry-from-Hell which broke out of their
enclosure and can be found wandering the neighborhood in packs, chasing
the newly-awakened bears and happily grazing the neighbors spring bulbs,
they finished our latest catalog-
