Mrs. [Frances] Trollope: The Refugee in America: A Novel. London: Whittaker, Treacher, and Co., 1832. FIRST EDITION. Three volumes, 8vo (19.5 cm), in early/period half calf and marbled boards. Bound without the half-titles. Wolff 6825; Sadleir 3235.

First edition of the first foray into fiction by Anthony Trollope's mother, written to support her destitute family after their return from a failed attempt of making a go of it in America. This disastrous excursion, while nearly destroying the family, was the making of Frances Trollope, as she used the experience to produce two works that were published in the same year: her most famous book, the scathingly critical Domestic Manners of the Americans, and this novel, the story of a young English nobleman forced to flee to the New World after fatally wounding the man who killed his pet spaniel.

Bindings with some rubbing and wear to the edges and extremities, sunning to the spines; contents with light toning, occasional minor spots and stains, two leaves in vol. III with closed tears not affecting the text, else clean and sound, firmly bound. A good, solid copy. Front paste-downs with the early armorial bookplates of C. Cunningham, W.S. (bearing the intriguing motto, "Over Fork Over").
