(CALLIGRAPHY) Andrade de Figueiredo, Manoel de. NOVA ESCOLA PARA APRENDER a Ler, Escrever, e Contar... Primeira Parte. Lisbon: Na Officina de Bernardo da Costa de Carvalho. (1722). Folio. (16),156pp. Plus 45 copper engraved plates (of which 44 are numbered consecutively), and a copper engraved portrait of the author, and a royal coat-of-arms above a cityscape of Lisbon (preceding the title). In all, there are 47 plates. Cont. mottled calf, gilt tooled spine compartments with burgundy calf spine label. The Arthur and Charlotte Vershbow copy with their book label.    $3,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
The fabulous plates, which are inserted after p. 55, feature flamboyantly curlicue alphabets with various letter forms, rococo decorations, and full engraved pages filled with extravagantly swirling, unbroken line drawings. 
First edition, the issue of the title distinguishable by, "e Previlegio Real," added after the license statement, and the final plate dated 1718. According to the author, his work is the first calligraphy book to be published in Portugal. Bonacini 66; Becker, PRACTICE OF LETTERS, 138.
