[Robert Southey:] The Doctor. London: Longman [et al], 1834-1847. FIRST EDITION. Seven volumes, 8vo (19.5 cm), in early/period uniform calf, decorated in blind, with beveled edges; marbled endpapers, page edges dyed red. Title-pages printed in red and black, half-title to vol. I, color frontispiece to vol. VII; bound without the adverts and errata.

A complete set of all seven volumes of Southey's miscellany. The first five volumes were published anonymously between 1834 and 1838; vols. VI and VII were edited by his nephew and published posthumously. A "fantastic, rambling miscellany" of tales, folklore, anecdotes, epigrams, etc., etc., the work is best known today for including the first appearance of the story of "The Three Bears" (in vol. IV). The Doctor was the last major work of Robert Southey (1774-1843) and the only attempt at prose fiction by this poet laureate and foundational figure of the English Romantic movement.

Bindings with wear to the edges and joints, some scuffing to the boards, darkening and rubbing to the spines, one rear board neatly detached; bookplates of the Wm. Ashworth Collection of the Accrington Public Library (stamped "withdrawn"), but no other library markings; some toning to the edges of the text blocks, a few stray spots and touches of soiling to the contents, but overall very good or better, unusually clean and fresh.
