LEROUX, Gaston. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. London: Mills & Boon, Limited,
(1911). First British Edition. Recent full black morocco leather by
Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with onlay of mask to front cover, silver
lettering to spine and front cover after the original, Japanese
endpapers, and all edges silvered; housed in a felt-lined black cloth
slipcase; vi, 392, 31, (1) pages with ads dated June 15. Translated by
Alexander Teixeira de Mattos. First published in book form in French in
1910, this First UK Edition was issued the following year. The author
had an abiding passion for the theatre, and after years of struggle,
writing newspaper reviews and a number of successful plays, he made his
mark with a novel about an extraordinary episode in the history of
France's greatest opera house. Successfully adapted into various stage
and film adaptations, most notable of which are the 1925 film depiction
featuring Lon Chaney and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical. Fine in an
attractive binding. (#021120) $5,000
